Former PM Manmohan Singh interacted with business community and the media in Mumbai today. Excerpts :
The present slowdown and the Govt’s apathy and incapability are affecting the future and aspirations of millions of our people. The much advertised, double engine model of governance on which the BJP seeks votes has utterly failed.
Industrial slowdown has impacted by rising Chinese imports. In 5 years, imports have risen by more than ₹ 1.22 lakh cr.
As demand & production have contracted due to economic mismanagement, business sentiments are down across the state & many firms face closure. The Industrial slowdown is coming in India’s way to optimally utilise its demographic dividend.
It is thus no surprise that many of our young men and women are taking up low paying jobs, investors are shifting to other states. Distress prevailing in our rural areas will add to the unemployment problems as migration increases.
Caught between low income and high death traps, the suicide rate has doubled. The obsession with low inflation is inflicting misery on our farmers. The Central Government’s import export policies are also hurting farmers.
While we have no control over nature, we can ensure a mitigation of the damage if we are economically sound. Unfortunately, the BJP Govts at the Centre and in Maharashtra have been unwilling to adopt people oriented policies.
The Govt is obsessed with trying to somehow fix blame on its opponents. In the process, it is unable to find solutions that will ensure the revival of the economy particularly strengthening of our banking system.
During agrarian distress, we delivered an effective loan waiver & ensured rural growth.
It is my sincere belief that we need to go back to these time tested measures if we are to ensure gainful employment for our young people, farmer welfare and a better standard of living for all the people of Maharashtra.
Current economic situation manufactured by the NDA-BJP Govt: Manish Tiwari
Congess leader Manish Tiwari spoke to the media on the economy. Excerpts
In the first 4 months of FY 2019-20, fiscal outward remittances are already at $ 5.8 billion. This is equivalent to the entire fiscal outward remittances during the 5 years of the UPA Govt during 2009-2014.
How is a country’s economy run? Common people save their hard earned money and put it in the bank. Bank gives them interest on that amount and banks extend loans to businesses and industries to generate employment. This is one aspect
The other aspect is, people make purchases & companies benefit from that. Companies use that money to further their business & generate employment. Third aspect is that Govt takes loan, invests and create infrastructure and public goods and that creates employment.
Today the fundamentals of Indian economy are in danger be it savings, expenditure, credit off-take or investments. People keep their money in banks thinking it is safe. When banks do scams like the PMC bank, people lose faith.
Senior economist Parakala Prabhakar has expressed serious concerns on the state of Indian economy. The current state of the economy is a man made tragedy. NDA-BJP Govt has manufactured current economic crisis through inaction and policies pursued over past 5 years.
Abhijit Banerjee who won the Economic Nobel prize yesterday, had written a letter to the PM along with 108 other economists in March, accusing that the Govt is fudging economic figures.
This project to turn India into a majoritarian nation has completely and absolutely crippled the Indian economy.

No deviation in promise to farmers: AP CM YS Jagan tells TDP in Assembly
AP CM YS Jagan read out from YSRCP manifesto to clarify in the Assembly that the Govt is sticking to the letter and spirit of its election promise.
He said, as promised, farmers will be paid Rs 50,000/- in four instalments. The first instalment will be paid on 15 October this year and the remaining three in the month of May for three consecutive years.
He found fault with the TDP for trying to mislead the public, instead of Congratulating the Govt for its efforts to stand with the farmers.
He further said that every day an issue misinterpreting the Govt’s attitude is being raised by the opposition and asked them to stop this approach.

There is a staggering innumeracy in so many of the Govt’s Policy Statements & Bills. Numbers are cited mindlessly, without proper thought to what they imply at a policy level : Dr P Thiaga Rajan
There are so many instances of innumeracy (one or more in every Govt. Dept.) that I’ve decided to write articles regularly, citing a case in each Dept..
DMK MLA & Party Spokesperson PTR. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan Tweeted :
Entering electoral politics after a ~30 yr. expat professional career has been an incredible learning experience. Some day, I hope I’ll find the time to write about it in detail. For now, I want to touch on two troubling aspects showing a decline in our Democracy.
First, a statistic to explain the extent to which the role of the Legislature has been reduced. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed 16 Bills (new or amended laws) in the final hours, of the last day, of the month-long Demand-for-Grants session which finished July 20th.
The total time allowed for discussion (on only 4 of 16 bills), was about 12 minutes! Also, 13 of the 16 Bills had been delivered to the Members/placed on the Table of the House only in the last 3 days of the session. 3 of them on the last day after we reached the Assembly!
Remember that Tamil Nadu has only 1 Legislative body (Council abolished by MGR in the 1980’s). If this Legislative body’s members do not even see Bills till hours before they’re passed, where is the deliberative role for the legislature as envisaged in the Constitution?
The Legislature is now a rubber-stamp for ruling party’s law-making agenda. There are many causes for this, & potential remedies, but I’ll leave that for wiser people to debate, for now. Instead I want to touch on something that compounds the problem of lack of debate/review.
There is a staggering INNUMERACY (mathematical illiteracy) in so many of the Govt’s Policy Statements & Bills. Numbers are cited mindlessly, without proper thought to what they imply at a practical/policy level. And the real tragedy is that many times, no one seems to to care.
There are so many instances of innumeracy (one or more in every Govt. Dept.) that I’ve decided to write articles regularly, citing a case in each Dept. Today, I want to start with a particularly bad instance: revival of a very important Land Acquisition Law post HC judgement.
The Bill’s first page & Explanatory note, are attached (now public information after Bill was placed in the house & passed). Consider the NUMBERS on the explanation page. The Govt. openly admits that it has only put ~5.8% of “acquired land” (1,373 of 23,804 ha) to actual use!
Note this Bill (law) is being revived to overcome MHC Court verdict. Is a history of such poor utilization a positive argument for continued acquisition, or an argument against? Now look at the next number: Cost of acquisition of remaining 22,431 ha = ~Rs. 1.85 LAKH CRORES.
Numbers lead to second question 2) The entire ’19-’20 Budget voted for TN is 2.17 Lakh Crores – of which >70% if for Salaries, Pensions, Interest, etc. So ENTIRE discretionary amount =~60,000 Crores. So how long will it take to raise 1.85 Lakh Crores just for acquisition?
Remember, ~60,000 Crores is to pay for all other expenses like Capital Investment, Govt Schemes, Ration Supplies, Scholarships, etc. So at best, Govt. can set aside a few 1,000 Crores for acquisition/year. Also it’s running big deficits, so increasing borrowings not possible.

GSLVMkIII-M1 successfully injects Chandrayaan2 spacecraft into Earth Orbit
It is a historic journey by India to an unexplored part of the moon to carry on scientific studies : Dr Sivan, Chairman ISRO
Dr Sivan, Chairman of ISRO speaking after the launch of Chandrayaan2 into earth orbit said:
‘Today is a historical day for Space and Technology in India. I am extremely happy to announce that GSLVMkIII has successfully injected Chandrayaan 2 in the defined Orbit, infact it has been placed in an orbit, which is 6000kms higher.’
Higher orbit will give the satellite more life, more fuel, for more maneouvers.
It is a historic journey by India to an unexplored part of the moon to carry on scientific studies.
A mind boggling amount of work went into identifying and fixing the technical snag that delayed the mission. This was completed in just 24hrs.
Another one and a half days were spent for carrying out the required checks to ensure that the snag was fixed.
Behind the success of the mission is the hard work put in by ISRO staff at all levels who stayed away from their families to give time for the project.
The mantle has now been given to Team Chandrayaan 2. In the next 45 days they will be handling 15 crucial manoeuvres and finally brining Chandrayaan2 around the moon, Dr Sivan added.
This mission will offer new knowledge about the Moon : PM Modi
Efforts such as Chandrayaan2 will further encourage our bright youngsters towards science, top quality research and innovation. Thanks to Chandrayaan, India’s Lunar Programme will get a substantial boost. Our existing knowledge of the Moon will be significantly enhanced.
Chandrayaan2 is unique because it will explore and perform studies on the south pole region of lunar terrain which is not explored and sampled by any past mission. This mission will offer new knowledge about the Moon.

Speaking at the function President Kovind said, Our legal system has a reputation for being expensive and for being prone to delays. There are some who tend to use and abuse the instrument of adjournments as a tactic to slow down proceedings, rather than a response to a genuine emergency.
This makes obtaining justice costly for the litigant. It would be a travesty of our republican ethic if a poor person did not get the same access to the law as a rich person. The legal profession must continue to address this collectively, he added.
