We are guided by politics of performance: PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi adderssed the HT Leadership Summit today.

Speech Highlights :

  • Enumerating several decisions taken by the government, Prime Minister said abrogation of Article 370 has given a new ray of hope to the people of J&K and Ladakh. Muslim women are now free from the practice of Triple Talaq, he said. He also referred to the decision on unauthorized colonies in Delhi, which has benefited 40 lakh people. Prime Minister said several such decisions were taken for a better tomorrow, for a New India.
  • For Better Tomorrow, our government is working on to solve the current challenges.
  • 112 districts are being developed as Aspirational Districts, with a focus on every parameter of development and governance.
  • There is a paradigm shift in the national discourse. Gone are the days of politics of promises. We are guided by politics of performance. The difference is for everyone to see.

This election in Jharkhand will mark an important turning point in the ongoing struggle between BJP on one side and secular progressive parties on the other : P Chidambaram

In a Press Briefing in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram appealed to people of Jharkhand to defeat the BJP in the state Assembly elections.

It is of no relevance to this election what is happening in Kerala or Assam or Meghalaya, kindly focus on the 81 people who have to be elected here. And hence in this press conference, I intend to only address those issues that affect Jharkhand :

  • India’s economy is in deep trouble. In Feb 2019, RBI projected the growth rate for the current year at 7.4%. In December 2019, it reduced to 5%. Never before has it happened, in 10 months RBI reduced it from 7.4% to 5%. It will go below 5%.
  • Jharkhand’s economy is in even more incompetent hands. In last five years, the state has slid backward very badly. Jharkhand’s growth rate is a good 2% below national average, per capita income, out of 33 states, Jharkhand was at 28th, now it has fallen to 30.
  • 44% of all industries that started or were running have stalled. This is the CMIE data. Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur is shut several days a month. Cars, coal, steel, ancillary industries in Jharkhand have been shut.

The Promises :

  • The Congress is promising that one member of every family will be provided a job otherwise the person will be provided with an unemployment allowance. This is the first promise we are making.
  • MSP for paddy will be fixed at ₹2,500 per quintal. MNREGA will be substantially enhanced so anyone who wants work will get it. Every family that does not have land or a home, will be given a piece of land so they can have a home known as the homestead right.
  • All crop loans upto ₹ 2 lakh will be waived, there are no ifs and buts. We made this promise in 2008 in central govt and kept our promise, we will repeat that promise here

NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of media reports about the death of four accused in Telangana rape and murder case in a police encounter; orders for spot inquiry by its investigation team

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that the four accused, arrested by the police in connection with the rape and murder of veterinarian doctor in Telangana, have died in an encounter with the police at 3:00 AM this morning.

As per reports, all four accused, were taken to the scene of the crime around 60 Km from Hyderabad for a re-construction as part of the investigation. As per police version, one of the accused signaled to the others, possibly to escape and they tried to snatch weapons from the police personnel when the police fired on them and they died allegedly in cross firing.

The Commission is of the opinion that this matter is required to be probed very carefully. Accordingly, it has asked its Director General (Investigation) to immediately send a team for a fact finding on the spot investigation into the matter. The team of the Investigation Division of the Commission headed by an SSP, is expected to leave immediately and submit their report, at the earliest.

Twitter was abuzz with conflicting views on the Encounter :

PV Sindhu :
Justice has been served! @TelanganaPolice
May Disha’s soul rest in peace.

Shobaa De :
Am i the only one having a problem with the police version of the Hyderabad rape case encounter killings??

Amit Malviya :
Encounter of four rapists by Telangana police may be an act of self defence but the jubilation surrounding it suggests collapse of our collective faith in the criminal justice system as much as politics of netas who normalise rapes by offering sewing machine and cash to rapists..

Saina Nehwal :
Great work Hyderabadpolice ..we salute u

This effort reflects the directions of the Prime Minister while addressing the DsGP during the 2015 Conference in Kutch, Gujarat. He had directed that parameters should be laid down for grading Police Stations and assessing their performance based on feedback.

Union Minister for Home Minister, Amit Shah stated that he has noticed that a vast majority of the police stations short-listed from the thousands of police stations in the country are police stations located in small towns and rural areas. This is also true for those police stations which have been ranked among the top 10. This indicates that while availability of resources is important, more important is the dedication and sincerity of our police personnel to prevent & control crime and serve the nation.

The objective was to rank the top 10 Police Stations out of 15,579 Police Stations in the country through data analysis, direct observation and public feedback. The ranking process commenced with shortlisting of the best performing Police Stations, in each State on the basis of addressing

  • Property offence
  • Crime against women
  • Crime against weaker sections.

Number of Police Stations selected initially from each State comprise of:

  • Three from each State with more than 750 Police Stations
  • Two from all other States and Delhi
  • One from each Union Territory
